Kraków Celtic Festival is marking International Women’s Day with this tune, “Krakowianki,” composed and performed by Lindsay Davidson on the Scottish smallpipes, sometimes known as the ‘wee pipes’.
In the bagpipe world, it is traditional to compose a piece of music to commemorate a person, a place, a moment in history. In such a way we create a rich universe of memories stored in tunes.
The historical reality is that women are under-represented in the body of pipe tunes that have been composed. This little tune is one of many small steps to rectify this.
